BOAT REQUIREMENTS (SAMSA) - St Francis Bay Residents Association

I would like to introduce you to Anchors Away Sea School. We offer the most comprehensive SAMSA approved skippers Certificates of Competency, as well as vessel Certificates of Fitness. We are based in Knysna, which in no way limits us to the area as we have travelled SA far and wide to present courses.

We have completed successful Certificate of Competency courses in St Francis already this year, with our last course numbering 13 candidates, of which all passed successfully. We offer our own Infanta 650 with 2 x 80hp Yamaha 4-strokes (fully rigged with safety equipment, VHF radio and Garmin GPS), alternatively candidates can use their own vessels for the practical.

The three Anchors Away members have a combined total of more than 45 years boating experience on various types of motorized craft and sailing vessels. All three are also fully accredited SAMSA examiners for theory and practical assessments of small vessel skippers.

A breakdown of costs:
Vessel Certificate of Fitness – R250
Certificate of Competency Cat R – R1450
Certificate of Competency Cat E – R1650

Each course is presented by a fully qualified SAMSA accredited lecturer. It is always so much easier to interact with someone about the material that needs to be learnt and not simply to try to self-teach a manual handed to you. Each course includes 5 hours of lectures, 2 hours of practical and a written examination covering the SAMSA syllabus. Courses are generally run over 2 days allowing candidates time to prepare for the exam, however, the lectures and practical are comprehensive enough to enable candidates to write the exam on the same day if they so wish.

CATEGORY R (Cost = R1450)
For vessels less than 9m in length enabling the candidate to operate on any lagoons, rivers, dams and waterways in South Africa.

CATEGORY E (Cost = R1650)
For vessels less than 9m in length and enabling the candidate to operate up to 1 nautical mile offshore from any sheltered launch site or harbour in South Africa.

Courses include:
1. 5 hour theoretical presentation
2. 2 hour practical evaluation on your own vessel or on Anchors Away fully rigged for training vessel
3. A written examination covering the complete SAMSA syllabus

Once successfully completed a temporary certificate will be issued, valid until original SAMSA certificate of competence is received. Course crew packs include paperwork, pen, line for knot tying, Log Book and a comprehensive Anchors Away training manual.
